Olm vs Axolotl

In a dim European cave stream that somehow connects to a Mexican-style underground lake, the two salamanders drift toward each other. The olm, pale and nearly blind, relies on its sensitive snout and lateral line to detect movement, while the axolotl uses its small eyes and feathery gills to track the intruder.
The axolotl lunges first, clamping its wider jaws around the olm’s tail. The olm twists and snaps back with its own tooth-lined mouth, but its slender body gives less leverage. Both animals thrash through the water, stirring up silt.
After a brief tussle the axolotl’s sturdier legs and quicker recovery let it pin the olm against a rock. The olm slips away into a narrow crevice, leaving the axolotl in possession of the pool.
