Habitat & range
Picture endless golden savannas dotted with thorny acacia trees—that’s prime giraffe real estate. These long-legged wanderers roam from the dry woodlands of Chad and Niger down through East Africa’s grasslands to the bushveld of South Africa. They favor spots with plenty of woody browse yet can tough it out in semi-arid zones thanks to clever water-saving tricks. Sadly, their once-vast territory has been carved up by farms, roads, and towns, shrinking the map in many places.
Giraffes don’t need dense herds or lush forests; they simply need room to stretch those necks and reach the high canopy. Loose groups drift across the landscape, following the best leaf crops. Where people and giraffes overlap, conflict can flare, but smart land-sharing projects are helping reconnect fragmented patches.
Diet & foraging
Forget grazing—giraffes are elite browsers that treat treetops like an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Their 45–53 cm prehensile tongues snake past thorns to yank down leaves, flowers, and pods, especially from acacia favorites. A single adult can polish off 34–75 kg of greenery daily, then retire to ruminate with a four-chambered stomach that turns roughage into energy.
They rarely bother with drinking, pulling most moisture straight from their food and going weeks between sips. That dark, almost black tongue may even double as sun protection while they feed in the open. It’s a low-effort, high-reward lifestyle that keeps the tallest browsers comfortably full.
Behavior & adaptations
Giraffes move in loose “towers” rather than tight packs—often moms and calves or bachelor boys hanging out. Males settle arguments with spectacular necking contests, swinging their heavy heads like medieval maces. Despite the skyscraper neck, they still have just seven vertebrae, each stretched to comical length, exactly like ours.
Ossicones—those fuzzy, skin-covered knobs—grow bald on top from years of sparring. A built-in blood-pressure system with one-way valves keeps brains from popping when they bend down for a rare drink. Their fingerprint-unique spots even help with camouflage and staying cool. Spotting one feels like watching a living, breathing tree-pruning machine.
Conservation
Listed as Vulnerable overall, some giraffe populations are hanging on better than others thanks to focused protection. Habitat loss, poaching, and human conflict have taken a toll, yet southern numbers are climbing again with community-led efforts. As keystone browsers they prune treetops, spread seeds, and keep the savanna from turning into a woody thicket—lose them and the whole ecosystem notices.

In the African savanna, a honey badger might approach a browsing giraffe hoping to scavenge insects stirred up by its hooves. The giraffe's long neck lets it spot the small predator from far away while its legs deliver swift, bone-jarring kicks that send the badger tumbling.
The honey badger's fearless temperament and thick skin help it dodge and circle, but the giraffe simply steps away or swings its head to create distance. With no realistic way to reach the giraffe's vulnerable spots, the badger soon loses interest and wanders off in search of easier prey.
