Heaviest Land Mammals Ranked: African Bush Elephant Still Rules

Heaviest Land Mammals Ranked: African Bush Elephant Still Rules

Showdown · african bush elephant, white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, giraffe, american bison

The heaviest land mammal on Earth is the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana). Fully grown bulls commonly weigh about 4.5–6.1 tonnes and stand roughly 3.2–4 m at the shoulder; cows are smaller, about 2–3.5 tonnes and 2.2–2.6 m (Animal Diversity Web). A careful re-analysis of living elephants puts average bulls near 6 tonnes and 3.2 m, with cows near 3 tonnes and 2.6 m (Larramendi 2016).

That answer is clear. "Heaviest animal alive," though, is a different question — and it does not live on land.

Land is not the same as largest

The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest animal known to have lived, with Antarctic adults reaching about 110 feet and more than 330,000 pounds (NOAA Fisheries). It belongs on any honest "biggest animal" list. It does not belong on a land mammal ranking. This showdown stays on solid ground.

Mass figures below are adult ranges from museum and field sources. Overlap is real — a huge hippo can outweigh a small white rhino — so ranks use typical adult mass, not the single heaviest anecdote ever recorded.

Ranked by adult body mass

RankCommon nameScientific nameAdult mass (typical / range)Notes
1African bush elephantLoxodonta africanaBulls ~4.5–6.1 t; cows ~2–3.5 t (ADW); avg bull ~6 t (Larramendi)Heaviest land mammal; separate from the smaller forest elephant (L. cyclotis)
2*Asian elephantElephas maximusAdults commonly ~2–5 tHonest #2 on most land lists; not yet a Wilder card
3White rhinocerosCeratotherium simum~1–3.6 t (ADW)Largest living rhino; square-lipped grazer
4HippopotamusHippopotamus amphibius~1.3–3.2 t (ADW); exceptional captive ~4.5 tSemi-aquatic; mass overlaps the upper white-rhino range
5GiraffeGiraffa (spp.)Males to ~1.9 t; tallest land mammalTallest, not heaviest
6American bisonBison bisonBulls often ~700–900 kg; large bulls toward ~1,000+ kgHeaviest wild land mammal in North America

\*Rank 2 is listed for honesty even though Wilder does not yet card the Asian elephant. See the card-request note at the end of this piece.

How to read the table without internet myths

Average beats anecdote. A Munich zoo hippo once hit about 4.5 tonnes (ADW). That does not make hippos "heavier than elephants" any more than a record brown bear dethrones a bison. Compare like with like: typical adults of the same sex and age class.

Bush vs forest elephant. Since 2021 the IUCN has assessed African elephants as two species. The African bush elephant is the heavyweight; the forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is smaller, with rounder ears and straighter, downward-pointing tusks. Our earlier Field Journal on the largest land mammal walks through that split.

Tallest ≠ heaviest. The giraffe wins height — males about 4.3–5.7 m tall — but tops out near two tonnes, well below rhinos and hippos. The American bison is North America's heavyweight prairie grazer, not a contender for the global podium.

These are the carded animals the table is built around — with how they actually play:

  • African bush elephant — Mythic Mammalia, Cost 8, Attack 4, Health 12, abilities Guardian and Herd. The board's biggest land tank.
  • White rhinoceros — Rare, Cost 6, Attack 4, Health 10, Resilient and Guardian. Square-lipped lawnmower of the savanna; see also why it's called "white".
  • Hippopotamus — Rare, Cost 6, Attack 5, Health 8, Guardian. River-horse mass with a bite that surprises people who only know the yawn photo.
  • Giraffe — Common, Cost 4, Attack 3, Health 6, Herd and Resilient. Tall browser, not a mass champion.
  • American bison — Uncommon, Cost 5, Attack 5, Health 7, Guardian and Herd. North America's woolly prairie tank.

In Wilder TCG, mass on the page often shows up as high Health and Guardian — elephants and rhinos soak hits so the rest of the herd can work. That is flavour with numbers behind it, not a substitute for the zoology above.

One sentence for searchers

Heaviest land mammal: African bush elephant. Heaviest animal alive: blue whale. Tallest land mammal: giraffe. Keep those three straight and most viral "biggest animal" posts fall apart.

Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) sits honestly at rank 2 above and is queued for a future Wilder card so the set can match the science.

Questions people ask

Is the African forest elephant as heavy as the bush elephant?

No. The African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is a separate, smaller species with rounder ears and straighter tusks. The IUCN has assessed bush and forest elephants separately since 2021; the bush elephant (L. africana) is the land heavyweight. See our African bush elephant card and largest-land-mammal Journal piece (IUCN; Larramendi 2016).

Can a hippo weigh more than a white rhino?

Sometimes, at the extremes. Adult hippos typically range about 1.3–3.2 tonnes and white rhinos about 1–3.6 tonnes (Animal Diversity Web), so the ranges overlap. Typical adults of both sit well below African bush elephants; a record captive hippo near 4.5 tonnes is an outlier, not the species average (ADW).

What is the heaviest land mammal in North America?

The American bison (Bison bison). Large bulls often weigh roughly 700–900 kg, with exceptional animals over a tonne — far below African elephants or white rhinos, but the top wild land mammal mass on this continent. Play it on our American bison card (Wilder field guide; ADW-scale ranges).

Does "heaviest land mammal" include polar bears or moose?

No for the global top ranks. Adult male polar bears and moose are large carnivores and cervids, but their typical masses sit well below bison-to-elephant megaherbivores on this list. Global "heaviest land mammal" searches resolve to the African bush elephant first (ADW; Larramendi 2016).
