How Many African Lions Are Left in the Wild? Vulnerable, Not Gone

Species deep dive · african lion

*About 22,000–25,000 adult and subadult African lions (Panthera leo) remain in the wild, according to the 2025* synthesis used by the IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group and the African Lion Database (IUCN CatSG lion profile; San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance IELC). That range — not a single headcount — is the honest short answer to "how many lions are left."

Vulnerable, fragmented, and shrinking in range

Panthera leo is globally Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (criterion A2c): assessors infer a population reduction on the order of the estimated ~34% decline in geographic range over three generations (about 21 years, 2004–2025). Extant range in 2025 is put near 566,675 km² — only about 6% of the species' historical extent (CatSG; African Lion Database — Species Status).

Taxonomy now splits two subspecies: northern P. l. leo (West and Central Africa plus India's Asiatic lions; Endangered) and southern P. l. melanochaita (East and Southern Africa; Vulnerable). Well-managed southern populations can look stable while West and Central Africa lose ground — so a continent-wide average hides regional collapse (ALD; IELC).

Main pressure points are habitat conversion, human–lion conflict (retaliatory killing), prey depletion from bushmeat poaching, and an emerging trade in bones and body parts. Lions are hardest to count where surveys, funding, and security are weakest.

Asiatic lions are a separate ledger

India's Greater Gir landscape holds the only wild Asiatic lions — about 670 adults and subadults in the 2020 Gujarat Forest Department figure cited by IUCN assessors (CatSG). That flock is stable under intensive management but sits outside the African 22–25k range. Do not add Gir into "African lions left" without saying so.

Pride life in brief

Lions are the most social big cats: related females form the pride core, coalitions of males hold tenure, and group hunts favour medium-to-large ungulates. Cub survival swings with prey, pride size, and takeovers (infanticide risk). That social engine is why a single protected park can rebound while an unfenced, prey-poor landscape empties.

On the Wilder card

The African lion plays as a Mythic Mammalia card: Cost 5, Attack 6, Health 5, with Ambush and Herd, plus the activated Pride Roar (spend 3 Energy to give another friendly creature +1/+1). High Attack and Ambush fit a night hunter; Herd and Pride Roar nod to cooperative pride life. In the free browser collectible card game, that is flavour sitting on the same Vulnerable species the Red List describes — not a cartoon king with infinite numbers.

If you came here from a search box: roughly 22–25 thousand adult and subadult lions in Africa, Vulnerable globally, about six percent of historic range, Asiatic lions in India counted separately. The rest of the page is why those numbers are a range, not a comfort.

Questions people ask

How many African lions are left in the wild?

Roughly 22,000–25,000 adult and subadult lions in Africa as of the 2025 IUCN Cat Specialist Group / African Lion Database synthesis — a working range, not a exact herd-by-herd census (IUCN CatSG; IELC).

Are African lions endangered or vulnerable?

The species Panthera leo is globally Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The northern subspecies (P. l. leo, West/Central Africa + India) is assessed Endangered; the southern subspecies (P. l. melanochaita) is Vulnerable (African Lion Database; CatSG).

How many Asiatic lions are left in India?

About 670 adult and subadult lions in the Greater Gir landscape of Gujarat as of the 2020 Gujarat Forest Department count cited by IUCN assessors — the only wild Asiatic subpopulation, counted separately from African totals (CatSG; IELC).

What share of historic lion range remains?

About 6%. CatSG reports extant range in 2025 near 566,675 km², roughly 6.13% of historical extent, with an estimated 34% range decline over three generations (~21 years) (CatSG; ALD species status).

What does the Wilder African lion card do?

On Wilder it is a Mythic Mammalia card: Cost 5, Attack 6, Health 5, with Ambush and Herd, plus Pride Roar (3 Energy: give another friendly creature +1/+1) — flavour for cooperative pride hunting and a territorial roar.
